RESERVE LOCATION

The Jim Mart Nature Reserve is located 4 kilometres north of Ogston Reservoir and 2½ kilometres north-west of Clay Cross. The reserve consists of two separate sites: the upper reserve in Alton village and the lower reserve near the hamlet of Press. The upper reserve is currently not open, and the lower reserve is open to Ogston Bird Club members only, directions are therefore only given to the lower reserve. Club members should carry their membership cards with them whilst on the reserve. The access locks use the same numbers as required for access to the club’s facilities at Ogston reservoir.

Lower Reserve

The reserve is located off Press Lane just south of Press. Press Lane is in two sections and it is worthwhile studying the map below in order to ensure that you locate the right part of the lane. In addition there is no signpost to the reserve, nor is there a sign at the reserve gate. Heading north along Press Lane from the Woodthorpe to Alton road, watch out for a wooden five-bar gate on the right (east) of the road, with a ‘bird box’ on the right hand gate post – this gate is the entrance to the reserve.

It is possible to park on the grass area inside the main gate, however this is not recommended unless the ground is in a dry condition or you have four wheel drive. There is room for two cars to park outside the main gate. Please do not block the entrance to adjacent fields or obstruct traffic on Press Lane.

For access using public transport the nearest bus stop is at the junction of Ashover Road and Coupe Lane in Old Tupton. This is served frequently by Stagecoach service 51 (Chesterfield – Clay Cross – Danesmoor). From the bus stop it is a 2 kilometre walk to the reserve: proceed in a westerly, then south westerly, direction along Ashover Road, turn right into Press Lane (signed to Alton), then turn right again at the next road junction into Press Lane (signed to Press). The reserve is then about 400 metres along the lane at a wooden five-bar gate on the right (east) of the road, with a ‘bird box’ on the right hand gate post. The web-site http://www.derbysbus.info/maps/ is useful for timetables and a route map (select the Clay Cross Town Map).
