Padley Gorge trip 15th June 2013

Hope Valley from Lawrencefield
birding near LawrencefieldThe Gang
In spite of a poor forecast, we got away with just one sharp shower and a lot of sunny weather. The birding was excellent and we managed to see most of the expected species. In addition to those recorded by the group that followed the same route the week before, we also heard a lesser white throat and saw mistle and song thrushes, a bullfinch, house martins, canada geese, a buzzard being mobbed by a crow, a stock dove, a pair of whinchats and a pair of spotted flycatchers. It was touch and go as to whether we saw redstarts but we found a pair during the descent into the gorge, feeding young at a nest in a dead tree. The group were also able to enjoy watching a pair of pied flycatchers feeding young inside a nest box in the same area.
